Katrina’s commissioned poem ‘What we leave’ is on the walls of Tremenheere Sculpture Gallery until 13 June.
Katrina was commissioned by the artist/curator Samuel Bassett to write in response to the theme ‘landscape’. Katrina visited Samuel’s studio to discuss the ideas behind the show ‘The land will call you home’. Katrina viewed quite a few of Samuel’s paintings and those of other artists that would be exhibited, then went off to write.
Katrina says: ‘When writing in response to art, I like to really steep myself in a painting or sculpture and then run away from it. Art can be the inspiration for what I write but can’t be dominated by it. I need to bring in my imagination and see where my own ideas take me. With this commission, I knew that one or two of the images from Sam’s work would probably feature in my poem, but I wanted to take myself off for a walk in my head and see what would happen on the page. I found myself thinking of a friend who had recently died, how he still peoples the landscape where I live and walk, how so many people that we’ve lost do that. I wanted to think about impermanence, about love and notions of “wildness”. I hope that some of this comes across in the poem.’
